Ingredients to make Breakfast Sausage Gravy

8 oz breakfast sausage
1 1/2 to 1 1/3 cup milk
2 tbsp shortening or lard
3 tbsp flour
Salt and pepper, to taste
Dash cayenne pepper, optional

Directions to make Breakfast Sausage Gravy

Step 1:

In a skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat, stirring and breaking up with the help of a spatula. Removed the browned crumbled sausage with a slotted spoon and place it over a paper towel lined plate.

Step 2:

Add 2 tbsp shortening, vegetable oil, or lard to the drippings in the skillet and stir well. Put flour and 1½ cup milk serially, stirring until blended and bubbling.

Step 3:

Add the crumbled sausage and if the gravy is very thick, put a little more milk. For seasoning add salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Serve with sliced tomatoes or fresh fruit over hot split and buttered biscuits
